In October 2024, North Lindsey College quietly welcomed a very special new arrival – Poppy, a lively and curious marmoset who’s now officially part of our Animal Management family!
After spending a short quarantine period settling in, Poppy was introduced to our resident marmoset, Ted. The connection was instant. “They ran into the corner and started chatting immediately,” shared Natasha Wynne, Technician Co-ordinator in our Animal Management department. “The next morning, we found them cuddled up together in a hanging basket. It was the sweetest sight!”
Since then, Poppy and Ted have become inseparable, exploring their enclosure side by side and forming a strong bond. In fact, Poppy has already had a positive influence on Ted, even encouraging him to eat his vegetables! Mushrooms, in particular, have become a firm favourite.
At 11 years old, Poppy is settling into her retirement years in comfort. Marmosets typically live up to 15 years in captivity, and we’re proud to offer her a peaceful, enriching environment complete with a new companion and lots of care.
Her presence is already making a difference for our students, who are gaining valuable hands-on experience working with this unique species. From learning about their dietary needs to understanding their behaviour and social bonds, Poppy is helping shape the next generation of animal care professionals.
