Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a real highlight that all of our students can get involved with. The DofE offers invaluable experiences from volunteering, life skills, activities, community projects and expeditions.

The past year has been full of unprecedented challenges, young people stepped up and played an integral role in supporting communities across the UK to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. Participants from DN Colleges Group dedicated 1391 hours to volunteering between April 2020 and March 2021, with a social value of £6329.05.

Young people’s extraordinary efforts transformed the pandemic experiences of some of the most vulnerable in our society. Some of the local projects the College has involved Foundation students helping out at the hospital with gardening activities, Fabrication and Welding students creating metal sculptures for various projects and Painting and Decorating students renovating Crosby United.

22% of new DofE participants, almost 40,000 young people, were from a disadvantaged background, including young people facing financial hardship, those within the criminal justice system and those with special educational needs or disabilities. For these young people, DofE can be life-changing, providing invaluable development and a recognised achievement that levels the playing field.

The partnership between The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and DN Colleges Group provides young people with the opportunity to take on personal challenges, setting themselves up with the skills, confidence and resilience to make the most of life. Standing as the biggest mainstream college provider running the DofE, DN Colleges Group uses the youth award to help transform the lives of its students and continues to innovate its offering, including the recent addition of a DofE apprentice role.
Dave Skinner (DofE Operations Manager – North, East, South Yorkshire and Humber)

“As a teacher, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is great as we get to support the students outside a classroom setting to learn new skills, make new friends and give something back to the community. They are given the opportunity to take themselves out of their comfort zone and try activities that they wouldn’t normally consider. Offering the scheme allows them to gain recognition for their hard work, commitment and dedication to helping others.”
Jim Booth (Digital Technologies tutor)

For over two years now the College has been part of TASS – the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme.

This national award demonstrates our commitment to supporting talented athletes across a range of disciplines progress in their chosen career.

The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a Sport England funded partnership between talented athletes, education institutions and national governing bodies of sport. We work together to bring the best out of our country’s most exciting young talent.

TASS helps athletes in education – aged 16-plus – to get the very best from their sporting and academic careers without having to choose between the two.

In recent years our students have achieved Team GB status and Polish International competitive level.

Further information can be found here.

We have a partnership with Scunthorpe United Community Trust where our football scholars complete their academic education and training – the students on the programme have access to:

  • Pre-season training
  • Commitment to weekly training
  • Access to competitive fixtures throughout the year
  • Scouting opportunities
  • Individual training programme, tailored to your needs
