We’re delighted to welcome two new residents to our Animal Management Department as marmosets Miko and Gurani join our ever-growing animal family.
The father-and-son duo have settled into their new home well over the summer and are being slowly introduced to our new cohort of students, providing another exciting opportunity for learners to develop their knowledge and practical experience of animal care.
Meet Miko and Gurani
Miko, aged 16, and his son Gurani, aged 9, have joined us from Tynemouth Aquarium in Newcastle.
The pair have spent much of their lives in a busy aquarium environment, surrounded by visitors and the daily activity that comes with working at a popular attraction. After many years in a lively, people-filled setting, Miko and Gurani are now ready for a quieter pace of life.
Their move to the college will give them a peaceful environment where they can enjoy care and attention from our dedicated animal management staff and students.
As Miko enters the latter stages of his life, providing a comfortable, calm and enriching environment is particularly important. Gurani, meanwhile, will continue to benefit from living alongside his father as they settle into their new surroundings together.
The arrival of the two new marmosets gives our students another valuable opportunity to observe and learn about these fascinating primates as part of their studies. Caring for animals in an educational setting allows students to put their classroom knowledge into practice while developing an understanding of animal welfare, behaviour, husbandry and day-to-day care.
Our animal family plays an important role in providing students with hands-on animal management experience. From observing natural behaviours to understanding the importance of suitable environments, nutrition and enrichment, working with animals helps learners develop practical skills that can support their future careers in the animal care industry.
Supporting Animal Care and Learning
Our Animal Management Department is home to a wide variety of animals, giving students the chance to gain practical experience with different species and learn about their individual needs.
Miko and Gurani are a particularly exciting addition. Marmosets are small, highly social primates with complex behaviours and specific care requirements, making them fascinating animals for our students to observe and study.
By working alongside experienced staff and caring for animals as part of their education, students can develop practical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of animal welfare and responsible animal care.
