Staff and students across North Lindsey College amassed a large food, household items and toiletries collection to donate to those in need this Christmas.
The team from Sport and Uniformed Services alone created 20 large hampers for those who may need a boost this Christmas and presented them to Prevention to Intervention.
The department pulled together after Sport tutor Jessica Plumtree asked her students if they wanted to help make some hampers to support those less fortunate during the festive period who may not have access to much food, household items and toiletries.
Jessica had an overwhelming response and as a result managed to create 20 large hampers which will be sent to families who either attend North Lindsey College or who live within North Lincolnshire. The Sport students also donated items to the Forge in Scunthorpe to help with food items for the homeless. Local companies such as Harsco have also kindly donated money to help purchase items for the hampers.
Level 3 Sport & Exercise Science student, Lewis Boyd said, “I have always been taught to help others, I really liked Jess’s idea to create these hampers therefore I passed my stepdad’s email to Jess to contact him to see if he can help donate some money or food towards this cause. My stepdad Andy works for HARSCO they usually give £500 a month to charities so I knew he would be keen to help with hampers.”
Jessica Plumtree (Sport and Uniformed Services tutor) said, “I am so proud of the team and students within our department, they have demonstrated some excellent teamwork pulling together to get these hampers together being very generous with donations. This has helped to execute this idea within less than 10days! Hopefully, we have made a difference within the local community.”
The College’s Hair and Beauty department also wanted to give to the local community and also collected food items that have been donated to another local campaign, ‘Helping Hands’ to feed families in the community over the Christmas period.
They successfully filled two full sized shopping trollies, raised £151 and have also donated £150 vouchers to be used at the College’s salon Ora in the New Year to local families. Karon Smith (Curriculum Leader of Hair and Beauty, North Lindsey College) said, “We are filled with pride taking this opportunity to make a significant difference to the local community during these unprecedented times.”
All of the food and items donated from the Hair and Beauty department will help over 700 individuals, including key workers and those who have been made redundant, furloughed and struggling to feed their own families.
Becca Breviglieri from Helping Hands said, “I think it’s great that local people come together in a time of need, everything sourced for the hampers is sourced locally, from local butchers, fruit stalls and shops and we are so thankful for your kindness!”
