Student Works on DIY SOS

Posted: November 17, 2021

North Lindsey College engineering student Lisa McBride has put her skills to the test working as an electrical tradesperson on DIY SOS The Big Build in Hull.

The project took place throughout September in Brandesburton, Hull. The team created a children’s adventure camping site for St Michael’s Youth Project in Hull which aims to improve the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people in Hull and the surrounding areas.

The project was showcased in a special episode presented by Comedian and TV and radio presenter, Rhod Gilbert as part of Children in Need.

Lisa had the opportunity to get involved in the project whilst working for a local engineering company alongside studying for her course at North Lindsey College. She said, “The best part of working in the project was I got to install sockets, spurs and lights myself, testing my skills. It was great to see the finished results and what I had achieved. The project was eye opening as I got to work with other tradespeople gaining experience working on a real building site.”

The DIY SOS Team helped to create a: field kitchen, landscaped campfire, exterior classroom, mountain bike course, bird watching tower, low rope walk, adventure playground, toilet and shower block and a storage unit for tents and bikes.

Lisa joined North Lindsey College as a mature learner after losing her job due to Covid-19, she wanted to retain as an electrical engineer. Lisa enrolled on a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Electrical Engineering at North Lindsey College and achieved a distinction. She has now progressed on to and is currently completing a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

She continued, “I always wanted to be an electrical engineer and when Covid-19 hit there was nothing stopping me. The tutors have been brilliant and go above and beyond to support you. I hope in the future to become a fully qualified electrical engineer.”
