Level 3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design

This is a one-year programme in The qualification is an ideal choice for those who have completed A levels or a Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Art and Design, or related subjects or Adult Learners looking to retrain. The qualification is generally delivered over one year but could also be delivered as a part time option over two years.

The programme builds on students’ prior experience, linking skills already acquired with ideas and challenges, which will increase their independence and enable them to demonstrate a full understanding of the relevant standards necessary to progress to Higher Education or to an alternative career path.

Following the completion of this course students may progress onto a Foundation Diploma, University Courses, Apprenticeships, Self-Employment or Entry-Level Employment. On this course students will undertake the following units.

Unit 1: Diagnostic Investigation into Creative Practice. In this unit, students will undertake a diagnostic investigation into visual language and creative practices. This exploratory unit allows students to become familiar with and experiment within a range of art, design, craft and media.

Unit 2: Developing Specialist Practice. (Level 3)
OR Unit 3: Developing Specialist Practice. (Level 4) This unit will provide students with the opportunity to reflect on the knowledge, skills and practices they have developed in Unit 1 and to develop a specialist practice. Students may choose to specialise in Fine Art, Illustration, Textile and Surface Design, Fashion Design, Sculpture, Jewellery Design, Interior and Exterior Design or Graphic Design.

Unit 4: Consolidating Practice. This unit aims to provide students with an opportunity to take control of their own learning and demonstrate their achievement by independently initiating, researching, producing and evaluating a high quality project.

Entrants will typically hold one of the following. A Level 3 Extended Diploma in a Creative Subject or a minimum of one A-Level in a creative subject. Adult learners are expected to hold GCSE’s graded 4 or above in Maths and English and demonstrate an interest in Art & Design.
