Level 3 Apprenticeship in Sport Development

Course Overview

This programme places great emphasis on practical ability backed up with an understanding of the principles involved. The Advanced Apprenticeship offers high quality training, to meet fitness industry standards. The qualifications are designed by the industry for employers and this ensures that the training received will equip students with the required skills.

Apprenticeships combine on the job and off the job training. On the job, an apprentice will work with an employers mentor or line manager, learning the skills on site and working towards the competency element of the qualifications. Off the job, apprentices work with their assessor and have access to resources, such as a workbook, to ensure they learn the knowledge elements of the framework. If the required level of Maths, English and ICT qualifications have not been previously achieved or where qualifications are no longer in date, apprentices must also complete functional skill qualifications in these subjects. These would be completed through agreed delivery methods and support including classroom, distance learning, e-learning and assessor support. Units you may study include: Manage own resources and professional development Contribute to strategic development in sport and active leisure Provide leadership in sport and active leisure Promote equality and diversity in sport and physical activity Ensure the health, safety, welfare and security of customers and staff Facilitate community-based sport and physical activity Support the development of sport and physical activity in education Lead and motivate volunteers Recruit, select and keep colleagues Involve, motivate and retain volunteers You will attend College one day per week to develop gain underpinning knowledge required for your framework components. Your employer will provide on the job training to develop your practical skills.

There are no formal entry requirements, however GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 9-4 or A*-C are desirable. If you haven’t already achieved a GCSE grade 4 or grade C in English or maths, then you will study either GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths alongside your other qualifications.

Apprentices can progress to level 4 qualifications and job roles such as a senior sports development officer or sports development manager. Apprentices could also complete further qualifications in this area, such as Marketing, Business or even Social Sciences or Social Policy.

The apprenticeship will primarily be assessed by direct observation of your work practice, oral questioning, written assignments, professional discussion, learning journal/diary and witness testimony. Your assessor from College will visit you in the workplace on a regular basis to support you throughout your apprenticeship. Functional skills are assessed through external tests. Where possible these tests will be taken on the day you attend College. However, you may have to attend on a different day subject to the timetabling of external assessments.

My apprenticeship is helping me progress towards the goals I have set for my future. Its helping me to get a rounded knowledge in procurement and also the skills I require for a future. Choosing the apprenticeship route is a great way to get a head start in the field you want to work in.
