HNC General Engineering (Instrumentation & Control)

Course Overview

The Higher National Certificate in General Engineering (Instrumentation & Control) is designed for learners who wish to work as technicians/technician engineers in instrumentation and control engineering design, manufacture, maintenance, testing or fault finding or the communications industry. Our programme is flexibly structured and provides both a practical and academic challenge, within the framework of current industrial practices in Manufacturing and Engineering.

Normally studied over a 2 year period (part time), these programmes can also be studied over 3 years (part time). This model enables students to grasp the scientific and mathematical aspects of the programme in the first year.

Mechanical Engineering

Year 1:

• Engineering Maths
• Engineering Science
• Engineering Design
• Electrical and Electronic Principles
• Automation, Robotics and PLCs

Year 2:

• Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)
• Instrumentation and Control Systems
• Digital Principles
• Industrial Systems
• Distributed Control Systems

You will normally be required to have achieved the BTEC National Certificate or Diploma or A Level or NVQ/VRQ level 3 qualification in
a relevant subject area.

If you hold significant practical experience or craft qualifications but not the usual level 3 entry requirement, your application would also be considered.

For the majority of students, the HNC is the qualification most appropriate to immediate needs. You could, however, progress into a part-time HND General Engineering programme at UCNL. This could then enable you to consider progression to a degree programme at a university.

A variety of forms of coursework assessment are employed on the programme. These include written descriptive and numerical assignments, short tests, laboratory and workshop appraisals, personal projects, group work, self- and peer-assessment, portfolio preparation and case studies.

Your Tuition fees cover the majority of costs associated with your programme (including registration, tuition and assessment.)

There may be some extra costs that you might need to make or choose to pay.
