FdSc Sport, Exercise and Coaching Science

Course Overview

This FdSc is an experiential and vocational programme developing greater focus on context and industry specific skills through the use of placement-based modules. These modules focus on key professional and practical skills required within the relevant sector. Within the work-based learning module, an entrepreneurial approach is embedded to significantly enhance employability. The teaching team use the term ‘entrepreneur’ in the same context as ‘enterprise’ in that students will be able to demonstrate creativity and innovation in practical skills and digital literacy. The term entrepreneur is not used explicitly in the context of profit generation, but the ability to independently and autonomously deliver services in a range of sport science contexts.

The FdSc recognises gaps within the sport, coaching and personal training industries specific to North Lincolnshire and aims to address this by including topics such as Psychology, Physiology, Nutrition and Performance Analysis at an advanced academic level.
The programme aims to:
• Appeal to those wishing to enter a sport related profession as well as those seeking continued professional development.
• Encourage students from disadvantaged groups to engage with Higher Education.
• Provide students with the subject knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to become effective practitioners in a range of sport & exercise contexts while meeting the needs of local employers.
• Produce well rounded graduates who can make an effective contribution to the skill base of the local economy and region.
• Develop in students a critical understanding of the subject through academic study, practical activity and placement-based learning.
• Develop independent and reflective students with the skills to undertake further training, develop existing competencies and acquire new skills that will enable them to progress within their chosen field.
