College Educates Students on Road Safety in Collaboration with Clugston
As part of Road Safety Week North Lindsey College, in collaboration with Clugston, hosted an annual event to deliver road safety messages to students.
Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by Brake, the road safety charity.
The annual event aims to inspire thousands of schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the week and beyond. It also provides a focal point for professionals working in road safety to boost awareness and engagement in their work.
The theme for 2019 was ‘Step up for Safe Streets’ and the event emphasised key messages including how human error can cause death or serious injury on the roads. According to Brake, every 20 minutes, someone is killed or seriously injured on a British road, yet each of these tragedies is preventable.
The event held was supported by EMS (Environmental Monitoring Solutions), CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport), LYTX (Driving Cameras), Defibshop (Defibrillator demonstration), Humberside Fire and Rescue, Traffic Police and Wheels to Work, Driving test checks and tyre checks from the College’s Motor Vehicle Department also supported the event.
PC Richard Starkie form the Road Policing Unit from Humberside police came to talk to the students and promote road safety after reporting a large amount of collisions and serious incidents this year. His message delivered to the students included making them aware of the importance of various vehicle safety features around tyres and lights and to make sure they are generally safe on the roads. Not just vehicles but cyclists, pedestrians and HGVs. He also highlighted the importance of needing to be seen on the roads and what road safety features vehicles have.
Clugston displayed one of its bulk road tanker at the entrance to the College and had members of staff throughout the day to promote key aspects of road safety to students and visitors.
Clugston Distribution Director, Tim Doggett, said: “Road Safety Week is a very worthwhile annual campaign. This forms part of our ongoing commitment to continually improve road safety for all our employees and members of the public.
