Catering Students Experience French Cuisine

Five catering students had the trip of a lifetime in France, as part of a two-week Erasmus cultural work placement with DN Colleges Group.

The lucky students from Doncaster College and North Lindsey College spent their work placements based in Troyes, which is typically known as the Champagne region of France. Each student was allocated to a placement in an appropriate industry establishment based on their abilities and career aspirations, working alongside culinary experts.

Erasmus International is funded by the European Union and the work-based placements, funded by the Erasmus programme included accommodation, transport and food.

Simon French (Catering Tutor at North Lindsey College) said, “This opportunity allowed students to not only use the skills they have already acquired through being at College and completing work placements, but it also allowed them to learn and develop their skills even further. This is great and well-respected accolade for all of the students to have on their CVs too!”

Students Olivia Brown and Rosie Bull’s restaurant placements in France have been accredited with the Galit Mallau, which recognises a high level of restaurants across France and other parts of Europe.

Rosie Bull (18) was placed in a Michelin Starred restaurant and said, “It was a really good opportunity, it gave me the confidence to go to a different country and cook in their kitchens and learn their cuisines. It has provided me with the experience employers look for.”

Rosie impressed the experts so much in France, Erasmus International have identified her for their Professional Erasmus programme offering her the opportunity to go on an additional three month placement in Europe, working at a high level. This work experience placement is at a Michelin starred restaurant in Portugal which will provide her with further opportunities to gain more vital work experience. Rosie said, “I hope this definitely encourages others to apply to this course when they realise the opportunities available to them. I really enjoy it and the tutors are very supportive.”

In addition to the valuable work experience the students had free time during the weekend to experience the local area, trips included a visit to champagne houses one day and Disneyland Paris.
