Sammy came to North Lindsey College to study a level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design before going on to study a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Leeds Arts University. Since leaving education, Sammy has gone onto work as a curator at Café Indie in Scunthorpe as well as undertaking numerous commissions and exhibitions as a freelance artist.
Sammy is also the founder of ‘Pop Up’, a gallery space based at Café Independent. Sammy regularly comes back to the College to support current students with their work, resulting in chosen students exhibiting with ‘Pop Up’ outside of the college.
Sammy said, “I have the College to thank for my success. I help support the students at College with their networks to help them curate and get work experience which is vital to their artist practices. The College has done so much for me. I had the opportunity to do specialist workshops and it’s the reason why I have got to where I am now.”
Dominic Mason (Exhibitions Manager at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre) said, “It’s really great to have a really good College course in town. Also exhibiting at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre is
Tamsin Anderson, an Art and Design Tutor at North Lindsey College and Alysha Harvey, a former student as part of the ‘Black Horses’ exhibition. Many of the students from North
Lindsey College progress onto creative courses at university, which is great for the area. Sammy has inspired so many other artists from Scunthorpe and I hope to see more and more people from Scunthorpe come back locally and work in the creative industries.”
Ruth Crabtree the Level 3 Programme Tutor said, “We are extremely proud of ex-students and our staff and appreciate the close links we have formed with the gallery and local art
groups. The employability skills current students develop through professional relationships is so valuable to their progression and supports them in reaching their aspirational goals.”
