Four Construction Students Secure Apprenticeships with Matthews & Tannert

Posted: April 17, 2025

Four construction students from North Lindsey College have successfully secured apprenticeships with Matthews & Tannert following a trade event organised by Ongo in collaboration with the College.

Edward Ferguson, Hayden Lingard-Andrew, Deimantas Sinkonis, and Calvin Ward impressed industry professionals at the event, which provided students with hands-on experience in their chosen construction trades. Held throughout National Apprenticeship Week, participants observed live demonstrations before applying their skills to create their own projects. Representatives from Matthews & Tannert assessed the students’ work and performance before selecting candidates to progress to the interview stage.

Reflecting on his experience, Edward Ferguson, a Level 1 Joinery student, said: “The event was really fun and a great opportunity. It was good to be able to showcase the joinery skills I had learned at college, and I was so pleased and excited to be chosen for an interview. The staff from Ongo and Matthews & Tannert were friendly and helpful, and when I was offered the position of ‘Apprentice Joiner,’ I was shocked but thrilled.”

A total of 12 students from North Lindsey College’s plumbing, plastering, and joinery departments were invited for interviews as a result of the event.

“At Ongo Recruitment, we are proud to have organised Trade Apprenticeship Week alongside Matthews & Tannert, one of Ongo’s largest contractor, showcasing the incredible opportunities in joinery, plumbing, plastering, and electrical work. It was amazing to see so many dedicated young people eager to take the next step in their careers, gaining hands-on

experience and expert guidance to shape the future of the industry,” commented Clare Ladlow, Recruitment Operations Team Leader at Ongo Recruitment.

Company Director at Matthews & Tannert, James Matthews said: “The Apprenticeship Week event was truly eye-opening, highlighting the incredible talent, passion, and enthusiasm within the local community. We are excited and proud to support five exceptional young individuals as they embark on their career journeys with us, helping them turn their aspirations into reality by undertaking their apprenticeships with us.”

This achievement highlights the valuable opportunities that partnerships between local businesses and educational institutions provide, helping students gain practical experience and transition into the workforce successfully.
