Former Tollbar Academy student Lewis scooped the ‘ITEC Learner of the Year’ gong at the national ECITB awards. The ECITB is the statutory skills body for the engineering construction industry in Great Britain.

Having completed the pre-apprenticeship ITEC programme, Lewis Colbrook is now
continuing to work towards achieving his apprenticeship whilst in industry with
Environmental Systems and Services UK Limited. He was delighted to win the
award stating, “I wasn’t expecting anything.  You don’t expect to pick up an award for
something that you enjoy doing.” Lewis continued, “I was overwhelmed and proud of
everything that I have achieved from College.  The course was really good and I
would recommend anyone wanting to work in industry to do it.  It really has created a
lot of opportunities for me.”

Lewis is continuing on his programme after spending a year at the CATCH site in
Immingham, he is now out in industry with an employer at Environmental Systems
and Services UK Ltd.  Lewis didn’t tell his employer before he went to the awards
ceremony as he was certain he wouldn’t win.  When his employer, Paul Nugent
(Managing Director at Environmental Systems and Services UK Limited) found out
about his success said, “As a company we are very proud of Lewis achieving learner
of the year, he has become a real asset to the company.  Lewis has excelled in his
approach to work ethic and when tasks are given to him he carries them out 100%.
He continued, “Lewis is a quick learner, and already is showing signs of becoming a
good electrician in his own right. ESS UK Ltd want to keep hold of Lewis as he will
be no doubt a major part of the company.”

Jill Cooper (Director of Business Development and Apprenticeships at North Lindsey
College) said, “The College are delighted that Lewis has been given this prestigious
award. The ECITB supported programme is a fantastic opportunity to support and
encourage young people into the industry. Lewis has demonstrated in practice that

with the right attitude and commitment to his learning that an employer can
recognise this and offer an opportunity for progression to employment and an
apprenticeship. Many congratulations to Lewis and we are delighted to continue in
partnership with ECITB offering the Introduction to Engineering programme to even
more learners this year.”
