FdSc Biochemistry

FdSc Biochemistry, validated by Sheffield Hallam University covers the fundamental concepts, principles and theories of biosciences and biochemistry.

The programme is aligned to the needs of employers and provides a practical and academic challenge within the framework of current industrial practices in Biosciences. You will study at the University Centre, which is our dedicated learning and social facility for all higher education (HE) students. Practical activities will take place in specialist laboratories situated within the STEM Academy located on campus.

The full time programme is studied over a two-year period with attendance of 2-3 days per week. The part time programme is spread over 3 years, with attendance on 1 day per week. All students are required to undertake a work-based placement at each level of the programme providing opportunities for enhanced employability skills.

During the first level of the programme, students from both named routes (FdSc Biosciences and FdSc Biochemistry) will study the same core modules although opportunities will exist for students to develop their interests through work-based and placement learning.

During the second year, 2 specialist modules will be undertaken depending on the named route opted for. (Biosciences or Biochemistry).

In addition, more specialised and focused projects as part of the Continuing Professional Development and Research Skills modules will support the specialist route taken.

The FdSc totals 240 HE credits (120 at each of level 4 and 5).

Applications will also be considered by individuals demonstrating recent and relevant industrial experience within biosciences / biochemistry.

The strong approach towards work based and placement learning can lead to careers in areas such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, research institutes, biomedical research laboratories, hospital laboratories and health related industries.

However you may wish to continue your studies further. You could progress onto an appropriate degree at Sheffield Hallam University or similar progression degrees at other universities.
