FdSc Professional Practice in Health and Social Care

This flexible foundation degree is a work-based learning award which combines health and social care education with either existing employment or work placements to develop an individual’s skills and competencies for a wide range of roles across the health, social or community care sectors.

The qualification, which is awarded by Sheffield Hallam University, is offered by a number of partners and has two routes.

Year 1 (Level 4)

– Work-based Learning 1 – Academic
– Work-based Learning 1 – Practice
– Reflective & Personal Development Skills
– Holistic Assessment Delivery & Implementation of H&SC Interventions
– Essential Sciences for Person Centered Care
– Foundations for Effective Collaborative Practice

Year 2 (Level 5)

– Work-based Learning 2 – Academic
– Work-basedd Learning 2 – Practice
– Promoting Health, Wellbeing & Independence
– Using and Evaluating Evidence to Inform Practice
– Leadership & Management

Normally GCSE English Language or English Literature and mathematics at grade C or above or equivalents (please see below), plus one of the following:

• A level or equivalent Level 3 points
• Access to HE Diploma from a QAA recognised Access to HE course
• We particularly welcome applications from ‘mature’ students who have practical
experiential backgrounds

GCSE English and maths equivalents

• Level 2 Adult Numeracy/Literacy
• Level 2 Key Skills/Application of Number

Personal Qualities

You must be able to demonstrate your potential to be caring and compassionate and the ability to develop meaningful relationships with service users and carers.

Achieve a Sheffield Hallam University qualification while studying in Scunthorpe. Once you have completed the Foundation Degree you will be able to apply for a number of professional courses including:

• BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult)
• BSc (Hons) Nursing (Child)
• BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health)
• BA (Hons) Social Work
• BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work
• BA (Hons) Physiotherapy
• BA (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography
• BA (Hons) Occupational Therapy

Many of these degrees will allow entry with advanced standing i.e. you may be able to enter into the second year of the degree.

In addition to these awards a bespoke Level 6 progression degree is also being developed which will provide a route to achieving a full degree within one year after completion of the Foundation Degree.
